The venue is in West Hollywood, not the city of Santa Monica
Because the venue name includes Santa Monica Boulevard, be careful not to confuse it with a trip to the beach city of Santa Monica. The event takes place on a stretch in West Hollywood’s Rainbow District.
When you set your destination on a map, check the names of the streets at both ends of the venue. On the day of the event, some roads are closed to vehicles, so you may not be able to drive straight to an address or store entrance you normally use.
If it is your first time, it helps to decide in advance which side of the venue you will enter from and which side you will leave from. When you share a meeting place with your group, pick a recognizable landmark such as an intersection rather than “somewhere on Santa Monica Boulevard.”
Before choosing it as an outing with kids or pets
The tourism board’s official guide notes that while it is an event open to the public, it recommends not bringing children or pets because of the crowds and the adult-oriented atmosphere.
For that reason, avoid planning as if it were the same as a daytime family costume event. If your goal is Halloween for kids, it is easier to compare by looking for other events with clearly stated target ages and hours in each organizer’s 2026 information.
Even if you are going as a group of adults, think about whether you can stay in a crowded place for a long time and how you will meet up again if you get separated. Do not get so focused on photos and costumes that you leave no room to check on your companions’ walking pace and how they are feeling.
Rules on bags, costumes and belongings
The safety information posted by the tourism board lists the following restrictions. Before deciding on your outfit and what to carry, also check the City of West Hollywood’s official page.
- Backpacks, camera cases, tote bags and similar items are listed as not allowed. Clear plastic bags are listed as permitted.
- Weapons, fireworks and drones are not allowed.
- Drinking on the street and bringing in alcohol are listed as prohibited.
- Bringing children or pets is strongly discouraged.
Even props carried as part of a costume may not meet the venue rules. Check everything you bring, including not just your costume but also bags, equipment and accessories. If official conditions are given, such as the dimensions of clear bags, follow those.
It is easier to get around if you limit your belongings to things like a means of payment, any ID you need and a smartphone for staying in touch, and think about how much you can keep track of yourself until you get home. If you bring items such as a portable battery, follow the instructions given at entry on the day.

About the WeHo Halloween Ride
The tourism board says that on October 31, the free WeHo Halloween Ride will run from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. the next morning in place of the regular The PickUp and Cityline services. The listed route is Santa Monica Boulevard between N. La Brea Avenue and N. Kings Road.
According to the guide, some vehicles also connect to Hollywood/Highland Metro Station from 6 p.m. to midnight. Do not assume the same vehicle will take you from one end of the venue to the other; check the route, stops and last service in the operator’s official information.
Check car and ride-hailing pickup and drop-off spots on the day
Road closures and congestion are expected around the venue. If you drive, check the parking lot’s hours and exit conditions; if you use a ride-hailing service, look up pickup and drop-off spots on roads that are open to traffic. This article does not designate specific streets as pickup or drop-off spots, since updated closures could make them unusable.
It is important not to plan your trip home based only on the carnaval’s end time. Even if the free shuttle is still running, the transit you transfer to afterward may not be available at the same hours. Look up your whole route, all the way back to where you started.
Splitting up your budget shows what is actually “free”
The carnaval itself is free, but food and drinks, transportation, parking and joining individual venue events are separate expenses. If your whole group is traveling together, it is easier to decide if you also factor in the costs in case your plans for getting home change.
- Venue: Entry to the outdoor carnaval is free. Do not confuse it with reservations or tickets for other venues.
- Food and drinks: Check menus and prices at food trucks and restaurants on the day.
- Transportation: Check round-trip transportation costs, parking fees if you park, and how you will get home if your plans change.
- Costumes: If you are getting a new costume, check before you buy that it fits the rules on what you can bring.
Checklist before you leave
- Check the scheduled hours of 6–11 p.m. on October 31 and any change announcements on the day.
- Use a map to understand which stretch of West Hollywood the venue covers.
- Check that your bag, costume props and drinks comply with the official rules.
- Check your route there, plus transfers and last service all the way home.
- Share a meeting place with your group and how to contact each other if you get separated.
If you are planning a costume from Japanese anime or video games, check the venue’s rules on what you can bring before focusing on recreating the character. When taking photos, do not block walkways, and respect the wishes of the people in your shots.
With costumes, looks are not the only thing that matters: how easy they are to walk in and whether you can keep them on until you get home are important too. When choosing unfamiliar shoes or a costume that takes up a lot of space, think about how you will move through the crowds.
