Japantown basics
The heart of Japantown is the intersection of Post Street and Buchanan Street. Facing it are the East Mall (22 Peace Plaza) and West Mall (1737 Post St) of Japan Center, a commercial complex built in 1968, along with the Kinokuniya Building (1581 Webster St). Between them is Peace Plaza, home to the five-tiered Peace Pagoda. On the north side, across Post Street, is the pedestrian-only Buchanan Mall (also known as Osaka Way), where you will find origami-shaped fountains by sculptor Ruth Asawa.
According to the Japantown Community Benefit District (JCBD), which manages the area, Japantown has more than 200 small businesses, two hotels, 12 nonprofits and 15 “Legacy Businesses” (long-established businesses recognized by the city). JCBD runs an ambassador program for cleaning and visitor assistance, as well as a security camera program.

Getting there
Muni (bus)
There is no rail station in Japantown. The official page of SFMTA (the city’s transportation agency) lists three lines: 38/38R Geary, 22 Fillmore and 2 Sutter. From downtown, the easiest option is to take the 38 Geary on Market Street or O’Farrell Street and get off on Geary Blvd at Fillmore or Laguna. The 38 Geary and 22 Fillmore run 24 hours a day, and the 2 Sutter runs every 20 minutes from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. The 3 Jackson is currently suspended. From BART, get off at a station such as Powell St and transfer to the 38 Geary.
By car / parking
The Japan Center Garage (1610 Geary Blvd, operated by SFMTA) has 745 spaces and two entrances, one on Geary Blvd and one on Post St (Webster side). It is open Mon.–Fri. 5 a.m.–11 p.m. and Sat.–Sun. 9 a.m.–11 p.m.; outside those hours you can exit on the Geary side. Rates are $3 per hour from midnight to noon and from 6 p.m. to midnight, and $5 per hour from noon to 6 p.m. There is a weekday early bird rate of $18 (enter 5–9 a.m., exit by 7 p.m.), a 12-hour maximum of $24, and a 24-hour maximum (also charged for a lost ticket) of $30. Shopping at Kinokuniya, Nijiya, Asakichi and other stores gets you a one-hour validation discount of $2, and Kabuki Springs gives $4 off. Only one validation can be used per ticket. The height clearance is 6 feet 0–5 inches, so be careful with large SUVs.

Peace Plaza renovation and Buchanan Mall improvements
Peace Plaza, the symbol of Japantown, has been undergoing a major renovation by the city’s Recreation and Park Department (SF Rec & Park) since late April 2024. Plans include reinforcing the five-tiered pagoda, redoing the waterproofing and drainage, stepped seating, a sound wall on the Geary Blvd side, and new paving and landscaping. The latest progress report on the official page is from December 2025, stating that “tensioning of the pagoda’s steel is nearly complete, and waterproofing and drainage work on the second phase continues”; no reopening date has been announced. The organizers of the 2026 Cherry Blossom Festival told visitors to “wait one more year for Peace Plaza to be completed.” Even as of this article’s publication, plan your visit assuming the plaza is still under construction.
To the north, Buchanan Mall (Osaka Way) is also slated for improvements by the city’s Planning Department and Public Works. According to the official page, construction will take about 12 months and is scheduled to start in winter 2026. Ruth Asawa’s fountains will also be restored. Pedestrian routes may change during construction.

Frequently asked questions
Can I spend a whole day in Japantown?
If you combine meals, shopping and the spa, you can enjoy half a day to a full day. Japan Center is indoors, so it also works well on rainy or foggy days. However, the building dates from 1968 and shops change frequently, so check in advance that the shops you want to visit are open.
When is the Cherry Blossom Festival 2027?
According to the official site, it takes place over two weekends, April 10–11 and 17–18, 2027, with the Grand Parade on Sunday, April 18. If the Peace Plaza renovation is finished, the plaza is expected to return as a venue for the first time in several years, but no reopening date has been announced.
How much is parking?
At the Japan Center Garage, it is $5 per hour from noon to 6 p.m. and $3 per hour at other times, with a 12-hour maximum of $24. If you shop, you get a one-hour validation discount of $2.
