The Honolulu Museum of Art (HoMA) is an option for days when you want to add some art to your beach plans. It regularly stays open late on Fridays, but it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Even if you are thinking, “If it rains, we’ll just go that day,” check the day of the week and the hours first.
Based on the official Visit HoMA page, this article sorts out general admission, the conditions for free admission for children, and how this differs from visiting the café. It is not an article with impressions of specific works or predictions of how crowded it will be on a given day.
Hours and address
| Item | Official listing |
|---|---|
| Address | 900 South Beretania Street, Honolulu, HI 96814 |
| Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday | 10 a.m.–6 p.m. |
| Friday | 10 a.m.–9 p.m. |
| Monday, Tuesday | Closed |
| Major holiday closures | New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas |
Older transportation guides and similar sources may still mention late hours on Saturdays. When we checked, the museum’s official site listed Friday as the day with regular hours until 9 p.m. Give priority to updates on Visit HoMA over outside listings.
Free for ages 18 and under; separate categories for adults
The official general adult admission is $25, and the Kamaʻāina resident rate is $15. Ages 18 and under and members are listed as free. Even if children are free, that does not necessarily mean the adults with them are too. If you plan to use a free day or discount for residents, check the eligibility requirements and the proof required.
The museum also lists conditional benefits for students enrolled at universities in Hawaii and for guests of partner hotels, among others. Participating hotels and conditions change, so don’t generalize that a room key from any hotel gets you in free. For travelers, the clearest approach is to plan on the regular price and use only the benefits you have confirmed you qualify for.
Visiting only the café is different from seeing the exhibits
The museum says that you do not need a museum admission ticket to visit the HoMA Café and Shop. You can plan a day just for a meal separately from a day to see the galleries. However, café seating availability, reservations and hours need to be checked separately. Don’t assume you can eat at any time while the museum is open.
If you are going for a film or a special event, check individually whether it is included in regular admission. It is important not to plan on the assumption that one ticket covers the exhibits, dining and screenings.
Check where to park first
The museum directs visitors to parking behind the Honolulu Museum of Art School at 1111 Victoria Street. Payment is by credit card only. Saving the main museum’s address and the parking address separately cuts down the time you spend looking for the entrance once you are there.
Check parking rates and any applicable benefits on the official signs when you park. If you visit during late hours, think about when you will finish and your route back to the parking lot together. If you use public transit, look up not only how you will get there but also your route home at night in advance.
Adjusting your plans for Friday nights and visits with kids
Friday nights make it easy to fit other plans in during the day, but how you divide your time between dinner and the museum matters. Our editors suggest choosing one exhibit you want to see and deciding whether to eat before or after. Late hours do not necessarily mean fewer people, so this is not a plan that guarantees you will avoid crowds.
If you go with children, setting small goals such as “find similar colors” or “pick one artwork you like” keeps the visit from becoming just a long walk. Follow the museum’s rules on touching exhibits and taking photos. Don’t pack in other big sightseeing stops back to back, so you can take a break when attention runs out.
